Cap’n - Bandwidth caps off the starboard!
Posted by The King on June 5th, 2008 filed in rantWell like it or not you will probably have to monitor your internet bandwidth one day very soon. How much have you used today? At this point in the game you might as well ask someone how much air he or she has breathed.
The debate on the fairness of caps (not to mention the bizzare don’t ask don’t tell responses from ISP when asked if they are capping or throttling) is not what I’m looking to debate here. As a matter of praticality all I’m saying is give me a good way to at least know how much I’m using. And it probably can’t be PC based since some of the major hogs in my house connect straight to the router (Tivos, Apple TV, gaming consoles, etc). Maybe router manufacturers can do a quick firmware update and give me a nice big meter on my router login page (if you’re at home yours is probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1).
PS - Wow would we be in trouble if bandwidth becomes as uncool to hog as other resources. After all, hogging bandwidth does make the wheels turn at server farms, right? Yikes. . .calling Ralph Nader and Al Gore on the bat-phone (recently repainted green from unfashoinable cold war era red). Brangelina you’re on standby for this one.
